WASHINGTON, DC – In a one-on-one interview with Statehouse reporter Kristen Eskow last week, Senator Todd Young (R-Indiana) spoke about the ongoing infrastructure talks in Washington, DC, along with Senate Action and Endless Frontier passing the growing threat of cyberattacks.
“We can still legislate and do important things in this country if we work together,” said Young.
Senator Young said he hoped Democrats and Republicans can pass a bipartisan infrastructure bill.
“I think the president should take an approach to infrastructure like I’m taking with the Endless Frontier Act,” he said.
Young supports this bill, which was passed days ago by 68 votes to 32 in the US Senate. It aims to make the US more competitive with China in science and technology, he said.
“Ultimately, we need to grow beyond the Chinese Communist Party, innovate and surpass it,” said Young. “We can only do that by doing what we did after the Second World War, namely in ourselves, in our human capital, as we invested it in the GI Act, in the education and training of people.
“This is a bipartisan move,” added Young. “The most comprehensive and toughest law against the Chinese Communist Party of all time.”
At his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin this week, he wanted President Biden to go tough, Young said. The trip to Europe doesn’t come long after Russian criminal groups are linked to massive cyberattacks.
“One of the things that the President of the United States needs to communicate to Vladimir Putin in no uncertain terms, perhaps through action, is that we can hit back harder than we can take a blow,” said Senator Young. “We have a cyber-ability crime that can really harm Vladimir Putin and his cronies.”
Senator Young said he believes both government and private agencies need to increase their cybersecurity.
“One of the things we have to acknowledge is that the federal government is not hardened to the extent we should be,” he said.
“We need to significantly improve operational safety,” added Young. “This ensures that we use our devices and computers safely and securely, have secure passwords and have all the hardware installed that is needed to keep others away.
“We still have some work to do in terms of greater outward exposure and working with businesses and individuals, and I look forward to working with the private sector and others to take whatever action is needed.”
When asked if this could include new business regulations, Senator Young replied, “It can be. We just have to regulate with open eyes and fully informed. Congress tried to address this in collaboration with the administration a few years ago, and it was then decided that companies could voluntarily report attacks they had witnessed on their systems. We may have to rethink that. “
Shortly before the President’s trip to Europe, Vice President Kamala Harris visited Mexico and Guatemala, where she warned against coming to the southern US border.
“I’ll be cheering her on, but she’s got to be tough,” said Sen. Young. “It’s a national security problem, it’s a humanitarian problem, and it’s an economic problem as they compete for American jobs. Ultimately, we have to reform our immigration laws, but we have to secure our southern border. “
