MUNCIE, Ind. – Lydia Greene is no stranger to hard work.
“I started working when I was around 12,” says Greene. “I started babysitting and then with pets, and then I started making rice bags. I have a spinal disease so I used it all the time and started doing it. “
Greene, who is completing her sophomore year at Ball State University, is studying business marketing with a minor in digital media.
While receiving a scholarship, Greene said there were many expenses that she had to pay for herself.
“I just don’t want any debt,” she began, “I’m paying $ 2,500 a semester plus books, plus technology fees and all of that.”
“In addition to school, I didn’t have time for a full-time job. I’m a full-time student first, ”she added.
She used her business mindset and learned how to make chunky blankets online about three years ago.
“I actually found a video on YouTube and was like, ‘Oh my god, this looks kind of funny,'” she said. “I made one, didn’t even keep it, but I thought this might be a good adventure to start a business.”
She put out feelers on Facebook herself, but admits it was a little slow to get through.
However, after posting about her blankets on a Muncie-based Facebook group, business skyrocketed.
“It went viral locally,” said Greene. “People are crazy about them!”
Greene says she has made and sold more than 300 blankets to date, shipped them to more than 40 states, and paid off five semesters of schooling with her sale. Looking ahead, it paid off in full next year as well.
She recently created a Facebook page for business to keep up with the growing demand.
“I’ve never had so much interaction,” said Greene. “I’ve never had so many orders. I’ve never had so much support for a single company that I’ve run. That is definitely the top. “
“I definitely didn’t expect to be able to pay off my school days the way I am.” She added, “I was lucky and got a scholarship, but I still have a lot of money to pay for school, books and eventually the rent pay.”
To keep the business going, Greene travels to craft stores across the state of Indiana in search of yarn. It offers five blanket sizes in 15 different colors.
Depending on the size, she usually does two blankets a day. If it’s her greatest greatness that’s a king, it will be someday’s work.
As the business continues to grow, she never imagined her company would get this far, says Greene. However, she is thrilled that people are responding to this and support her goal of going debt free.
She also uses her success as a reminder to those who want to consider their own sales opportunities to pursue their dreams.
“Don’t be afraid to do what you love to do. Find out what you love to do and make something of it, ”she said.
“Don’t be afraid to jump off the springboard,” she added. “Don’t be afraid to go headlong into what you love. If it does not succeed, it is as simple as that, but you cannot fear your failure. “
