Kevin Miller’s election to the Ohio House of Representatives is a positive step forward for the legislature and residents of the area.
Miller replaces accused former spokesman Larry Householder to serve the 72nd Ward after other lawmakers ruled Householder out in June. The district includes Coshocton County, Perry County, and part of Licking County.
While Householder’s overthrow took a long time, the House Republicans were quick to find his successor. And we think they made solid choices for the district.
Miller most recently served as the Ohio State Highway Patrol’s legislative liaison, drafting laws and keeping soldiers informed of what was going on in the Ohio Legislature. Previously, he was in command of the Patrol’s Granville Post.
Early reviews from people familiar with Miller have been overwhelmingly positive. Described as the opposite of the often stormy homeowner and as someone who is open to raising issues and active in the local community. He has generally been described as a dedicated civil servant.
His law enforcement background will also offer prospects as lawmakers seek to implement critical police reform.
We’re obviously biased here, but Licking County should benefit from having two residents in the legislature. It will be up to Miller to prove that he is also providing quality representation to the people of Counties Perry and Coshocton.
Ohio faces many important problems. We are excited to see how Miller addresses you and wish him continued success.
Biotech boom
Licking County got some great news last week with the announcement that Amgen will build a $ 365 million pharmaceutical packaging facility in New Albany that will employ 400 people.
The facility is being built near Beech Road and 161 Ohio, with much of it in Licking County. It is expected to have an annual salary of around $ 41 million.
Obviously it is an enormous blessing to bring so many skilled jobs to the region. Not only will this mean more opportunities for local workers and tax revenue for local governments, but it will also show that the region is a place where companies want to invest. Business leaders highlighted access to a talented workforce in the area and stressed the urgent need to continue investing in post-secondary education.
These types of investments should further spur local executives to improve public transport opportunities. While such developments will always add value to Newark residents, it will be even more direct when people have a way to get to work without a car.
Celebrate independence
Independence Day celebrations this year have largely returned to normal after a year of COVID-19 cancellations. We are grateful for that.
We hope readers with family and friends enjoyed one of Licking County’s many fireworks celebrations. We hope the holiday will remind people that while we have differences, we are fortunate enough to live in a country that offers the freedom to disagree. Let’s just try without being uncomfortable.
