STI extends financial aid and scholarship programs amid COVID-19 – Manila Bulletin

STI Expands Grant and Scholarship Programs Amid COVID-19

The new normal has changed the country’s educational landscape and has given way to the introduction of distance and online learning. This meant students and their families had to adjust to the challenges that came with the sudden shift, including costly internet setup, connectivity issues, availability of equipment for online learning, and more.

The Philippine Institute for Development Studies found that only 1 percent of poor households, 6 percent of low-income households, and 27 percent of lower-middle-income households have computers to keep up with the new learning environment.

This is compounded by the quarantine measures and lockdowns that have impacted employment and businesses in the country. The unemployment rate was 17.7 percent in April 2020 and 10 percent in July 2020 and mainly affected the informal sector, minimum wage earners and workers in an unemployed, unpaid agreement.

Despite these socio-economic barriers, education remains a priority for learners and their families across the country. Several educational institutions, including STI, offer assistance to enable high school and college students to continue their studies unhindered in the current circumstances, to advance further, and ultimately to fulfill their future potential.

With STI’s commitment to providing real-life education to the next generation of high achievers, STI ensures through its various financial aid and scholarship programs that young people achieve a quality education.

STI Open Scholarship Program

The STI Open Scholarship program awards partial and full scholarships to academically deserving students in line with its mission to develop and promote students into competent and responsible members of society. It includes a two-hour browser-based standardized assessment tool consisting of science, math, English and abstract thinking.

GSIS and Pag-IBIG Educational Assistance Programs

High school and college students arriving this 2021-2022 school year and transferees are eligible for the GSIS and Pag-IBIG educational support programs in STI.

STI has a longstanding partnership with the two major government institutions to provide educational support to GSIS and PAG-IBIG members and their families.

GSIS and PAG-IBIG members and their qualified relatives receive a 20% scholarship subsidy on tuition fees at every STI campus nationwide if they only present the GSIS UMID or PAG-IBIG Loyalty or Loyalty Plus card.

The GSIS and PAG-IBIG Educational Assistance Programs can be renewed every semester or annually if the retention guidelines and conditions are met.

Interested applicants can view the complete conditions of participation and application requirements for the GSIS and Pag-IBIG at https://bit.ly/STI-GSIS-PAGIBIGGRANTS or inquire at their preferred STI campus.

State subsidy and voucher programs

STI accepts the following grants and voucher holders from the Department of Education (DepEd), the Private Education Assistance Committee (PEAC), and the Unified Student Financial Assistance System for Tertiary Education (UniFAST) at all locations nationwide:

DepEd Senior High School Voucher Program

PEAC Educational Service Contracting (ESC) grants

University funding (TES)

“With these programs, we want to support our students affected by the COVID-19 pandemic and their families by subsidizing tuition fees and awarding scholarships. Hopefully through this initiative we will encourage and empower them to continue their studies despite these difficult times and to see the value of education in opening up more opportunities in the future, ”said Aisa Q. Hipolito, STI VP for Academics.
