Glen Ellyn homeowners battle Allstate insurance company over $300K water damage claim

GLEN ELLYN, Ill. (WLS) – You rely on your home insurance to cover damage, but a couple is battling their insurance company with an estimated $ 300,000 in repairs and cleanups over a burst pipe and watered-up house.

There is a dispute over water damage from a burst pipe that nearly destroyed their home. It all happened while the retired couple was stuck in South Africa. Now they are saying that their insurance company refuses to cover their damage.

From the outside, her house in Glen Ellyn looks perfect. But from the inside, Betsy and Floyd Rogers’ house shows a flood disaster.

“And it’s very tiring because I don’t know how we can restore this house, that’s the real worry,” said Betsy Rogers.

A pipe burst in January caused extensive water damage, in which the entire interior walls and floors were destroyed by a water overflow.

The repair and cleanup was estimated at $ 300,000. That price and claim were rejected by her insurance company, Allstate.

“We’ve had Allstate insurance since 1964, we had auto insurance, we had home insurance, we didn’t deviate,” said Floyd Rogers. “We paid our premiums regularly. We feel a little hurt, they didn’t even bother to come out and look at the damage.”

The Rogers said Allstate denied the claim because the couple were out of the house at the time and the pipes were frozen.

The Rogers and their lawyers said there was no evidence of the pipes freezing and the leak was due to a fault in a utility line. They added that they never turned off the water or heating when they were out of town.

ABC7 sent the Rogers’ entitlement information, estimates, and images to Allstate. The insurance company would just say, “We protect customers and their privacy, so we do not share specific claims details. We will continue to work closely with the customer to resolve the claim under their policy.”

Financial and consumer experts at insurance comparison website Value Penguin said you can challenge your home insurance decision by filing an appeal, filing a complaint with your state insurance department, and even asking the state to broker a solution if it isn’t yours Like.
