The NSCC provides a unique environment in which industrial, government and academic partners work together in world-class facilities to develop solutions to current and future national security issues, to provide students and researchers with cutting-edge academic experience while attracting talent for today’s workforce develop.
During the visit, Haugh shared his perspective on the changing digital landscape and how conflict is often viewed from a specific perspective to fight our nation’s wars.
“Now we are at a different stage in our history where our industry and our people are in many ways the target of many of the activities taking place today to give adversaries an advantage,” he said. “What does this mean for us as a nation and how do we work together to really secure what is the engine of our nation, namely innovation?”
With a central theme of innovation, the NSCC is home to several UTSA research centers and institutes, including the Cyber Center for Security and Analytics and the MATRIX AI Consortium for Human Well-Being, in addition to supporting laboratories on campus such as the San Antonio Virtual Environments (SAVE) Lab, the Internet of Things (IoT) laboratory; and the Control Systems / SCADA Laboratory.
The visit to the 16th Air Force highlighted a variety of initiatives ranging from virtual and augmented reality demonstrations to encryption detection devices, Internet of Things vulnerabilities, and Joint Base San Antonio’s 5G and telemedicine / telemedicine pilot program. Partners discussed their research and how their data and / or techniques can be used as a resource to enhance Department of Defense and National Security capabilities.

The NSCC also provides a great opportunity for the 16th Air Force Team to improve training quality and capacity, address talent acquisition, and accelerate the capabilities of the Air Force’s Advanced Battle Management System and its role in the Joint All Domain Command and Control, and demonstrated how these services will network across the Department of Defense.
“Partnerships with education and industry are vital to improve our skills, collaborate and innovate to stay competitive against adversaries,” said Frank of Savior, Air Force Cryptologic Office, Intelligence Force Management and Training, Senior Language Authority, and Chief Human Language Technology Authority who were also in attendance. “We have worked with the NSCC on several initiatives aimed at modernizing Air Force cryptology training, including virtual and augmented reality.”
These partnerships help support the war fighter by advancing education, research, innovation and collaboration in areas of zero trust, the integration of 5G technology, artificial intelligence, data science and digital forensics.
“Partnerships like this also serve as a gateway to recruiting talent who are important to sustain our growing mission and the demands of a changing environment,” said von Heiland.
Haugh concluded his visit by highlighting the importance of partnerships with both academia and industry in advancing research and innovation, sharing future opportunities for collaboration in areas such as the capabilities and role of the Department’s Advanced Battle Management System of the Air Force could look into Joint All Domain Command and Control and how the services will be linked across the Department of Defense.
“The partnerships that exist here from an educational perspective and with the city of San Antonio are phenomenal,” said Haugh.
