5 film schools in Canada for your shot at moviemaking

It’s a great time to go to a film school in Canada. CIC News reports that the country has welcomed television (TV) and film staff since the industry reopened last summer. There are over 87 major productions running in Ontario alone, including Star Trek, See, and Titans. This booming entertainment industry makes it possible to provide exciting, valuable post-secondary education in areas with lively production scenes. Here are five film schools in Canada, each with their own charm.

Vancouver Film School (VFS)

If you want to study the art of film from brainstorming to post-production, VFC is the place for you. If you are looking for a quick way into the industry, you can do a one-year diploma in film production in which you develop a demo reel of your work. You will explore the five disciplines of filmmaking – directing, cinematography, production, production design, and post-production – and specialize in two of these streams.

As a film school, you can bet that VFS has the right studios and equipment to create movies, TV shows and animated works alike. VFS is spread over eight campuses in Vancouver, in so-called Hollywood North Canada.

University of British Columbia (UBC)

With a film school that has shaped artists for over 50 years, UBC has earned a reputation as the most international university in North America. The four-year Bachelor of Fine Arts includes, for example, directing, production and camera up to conducting lessons in the university’s NBC studio (complete with green screen and grid lighting).

Students also work on film sets with their supervisors, which enables a hands-on, peer learning experience that is as close to reality as possible. Interestingly, actresses Evangeline Lilly and Hannah Simone both studied international relations at UBC before venturing into acting.

George Brown College of Applied Arts and Technology (GBC)

GBC is known as the “living laboratory” for students in the industry and focuses on creating sound for film, television and games. His courses on visual effects and interactive media are as popular as his diploma in video design and production. In addition to audio and visual effects, the diploma also offers an introduction to technology, production, directing and storytelling, culminating in a final project that drives you to create portfolio-worthy work. GBC students hang out in downtown Toronto, with campuses around St. James, Casa Loma, and the Waterfront.

University of Capilano

At Capilano’s School of Motion Picture Arts Film School, the classes are small, but the options are great. For example, students of the four-year Bachelor of Motion Picture Arts have access to an 8,000 square meter sound stage, 3D camera rigs and a 3D editing laboratory. You are studying technical direction and camera; enter into all phases and types of processing; and write scripts and then learn to produce them on camera.

Best of all, they are privy to collaborations and internships in the heart of Canada’s West Coast film industry. This university is located on the slopes of the North Shore Mountains that overlook Vancouver.

Deer College

Halfway between Calgary and Edmonton, RDC is well on its way to becoming a polytechnic university soon. From performer to producer, from director to technician, every film student will find the necessary basic knowledge in the four-year Bachelor of Applied Arts. You will be introduced to both the visual fundamentals and advanced cinematography and will have the opportunity to complete your fourth year on any film set.

Alternatively, industry experts can complete intensive post-graduate training consisting of production and performance streams for dramatic narrative films. This film school has received broad industry support from associations, networks and studios for its insightful, well-rounded and practical programs.
