THE WOODLANDS, TX – We caught up with Dr. Rebecca Riley, President of Lone Star College Montgomery, sat down to speak about how the Lone Star College system has grown, new programs are offered, and future growth of the college. She has been President of LSC Montgomery since 2015 and has also been part of the Lone Star College system for 26 years. She was previously the vice president of teaching at LSC-Kingwood. She has been named 4th President of Lone Star College Montgomery. We have Dr. Riley asked various questions about the Lone Star College Montgomery in particular and the Lone Star College System in general and we learned that there are some very interesting and amazing things you should know about college. These are a couple of things she told us.
There are opportunities in today’s Lone Star College System environment that were considered unheard of decades ago.
LSC is one of the largest community college systems in the country
Many people may not know this, but the Lone Star College System is the second largest community college in Texas and one of the largest community college systems in the country. It is a fast growing college. According to their website for the Montgomery campus, “enrollments for the fall 1995 semester were about 3,200 students”. Today, Lone Star College Montgomery is more than four times that number. In Texas, the Lone Star College system ranks second after the Dallas Community College. There are approximately 16,000 students at Montgomery College and nearly 100,000 students in the entire system. For years, Lone Star College has provided an affordable way for students to receive quality education near where they live and with a variety of career options. With three undergraduate programs, over 100 associate programs, and partnerships with various colleges across the state, Lone Star College is an excellent place to begin your college experience and, in many cases, complete your 4-year degrees. Today’s adult education center is far from what it used to be. There are opportunities in today’s Lone Star College System environment that were considered unheard of decades ago.
Lone Star College Montgomery – More students on duty
Rebecca mentioned that LSC Montgomery had more students in 2019 than any other year so far. They enrolled over 16,000 students this year. When Covid hit, like everyone else, they had to adjust to the demands of the pandemic. She told us that even during the worst time of Covid-19, Lone Star College Montgomery did not have to let any of its employees go. They kept all full-time workers and paid their part-time workers for several weeks. It was proof of the efficiency of the university and its commitment to its employees.
We asked Rebecca how the residual effects of the pandemic will affect the coming semester. She mentioned that some students are opting for their online programs, but the face-to-face programs are filling up and they are confident that in 2019 it will not only peak but surpass it. She told us that there are no additional fees to take online courses, so students who want to attend remotely can do so.

We asked her about the bachelor’s degrees that are offered at LSC Montgomery. Rebecca said –
“A few years ago, lawmakers gave us permission to do three bachelor’s degrees, and just recently, on June 16, the governor signed a law that allows us to expand to five bachelor’s degrees under certain conditions. The number is limited and our aim is to create degrees that meet labor market demand. For example, we have a bachelor’s degree in cybersecurity. Our bachelor’s degree programs are designed to help people in craft trades who advance their careers at a certain point in a craft occupation. They may want to move into management and that requires a degree, but often their associate degree doesn’t really match a bachelor’s careers degree and builds on a supervision management-like degree. We’ll try to add some new bachelor’s degrees that fit into similar niches. LSC began offering a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing; Bachelor of Applied Technology in Cybersecurity; and Bachelor of Applied Science in Energy, Manufacturing and Trades Management in autumn 2019. “

Rebecca also mentioned that they are in the process of building a new conference center on campus and that this building will be completed in October this year and ready for occupancy by the end of the year. It is a wonderful facility that will host student services. Rebekah said –
“The conference center or the student union will have a registration. Advice, advice, office, financial support and other services related to registration management systems that will be located in this building with a conference center. “
Dual Credit Courses – What You Didn’t Know
One of the cool things high school students can take part in is LSC Montgomery’s dual credit hour program. The composition of the student body at LSC Montgomery is interesting. Most people don’t know this, but of the 16,000 students enrolled, about 25% are dual degree students. This includes public school students and students who are homeschooled. It’s a great way to upgrade college’s initial courses and costs. LSC Montgomery is usually great value for money. Rebecca mentioned that you can get an associate’s degree for about $ 5,000 total and a bachelor’s degree for about $ 10,000. One particularly cool aspect of dual credit courses is that these students don’t have to pay tuition fees. You pay a small fee for the course, but the tuition fees are waived. You can take around 42 hours in dual study programs. She mentioned that these courses are a core educational requirement of all Texas public colleges so transferring the courses is not a problem. The student just needs to ensure that the dual credit courses they are taking are part of the course they will choose at their chosen university.
LSC Montgomery is 26 years old and the number is rising
LSC Montgomery has been around since 1995. They celebrated their 25th anniversary last year. The Lone Star College System itself has existed since 1973 and was originally called North Harris County College. It was founded in 1972 and opened its first classes in 1973. When it expanded to Montgomery County in 1991, it changed its name to North Harris Montgomery Community College. The new name, Lone Star College System, was not changed until 2007. LSC Montgomery’s dedication was voiced by George W. Bush, then governor of Texas. A fun story about LSC Montgomery is that the mascot used to be a squirrel. It wasn’t until her 15th birthday that the mascot was turned into a maverick. Monty the loner.

The college offers 40 career programs as well as academic transfer courses in a variety of subjects. Programs include aviation, live entertainment technology, criminal justice, assistant physiotherapist, biotechnology, nursing, human resources, computer information technology, management, radiology technologist, audiovisual systems specialist, surveyor / mapping technology, fire science, and more. Weekend courses offer more options for those who want to take one or more courses on a Friday, Saturday or Sunday. A full range of transfer, career, and funding programs – including art, music, science, history, and government – are also available. A training department offers employee and customized corporate training through the Lone Star Corporate College. LSC-Montgomery also offers summer youth camps and a year-round robust learning organization for active, older adults – the Academy for Lifelong Learning (ALL). Steps away is the Lone Star College-University Center in Montgomery, offering bachelor, master, and specialized degrees from several universities in the area in a variety of courses. In addition, the Sam Houston State University’s Woodlands Center opened next to LSC-Montgomery in 2012, offering additional Bachelor, Master and PhD programs.
