Pre-college programs at Brown offer high school students the chance to learn on campus or online

This year, students could choose to attend pre-college programs in person, where they would live, study, and meet other participants on campus, or online, where they could take courses on a more flexible schedule. All virtual courses are asynchronous – instead of having students attend Zoom sessions at set times, faculty worked with Brown’s digital learning and design team to transform the courses into a flexible format that students can access at any time and can access from anywhere in the world.

For example, in Explaining the Mysteries of Common Events: Acid / Base Chemistry, chemistry student and lecturer Leonard Sprague recorded a series of lectures that students can access throughout the course. The lectures are paired with “mini experiments” – including do-it-yourself projects that can be carried out with standard household items or with consumables in order to gain a better understanding of acids and bases. Students receive a virtual introduction to manual and automatic pH devices, UV-Vis spectroscopy (for color change testing), laboratory glassware, and safety practices without having to enter a laboratory.

Other courses, such as “Habitable Worlds: Possible Places to Live in the Solar System and Beyond,” which have long been a popular choice among pre-college students on campus, found ways to create a virtual community through their new format. The teaching team offered synchronous consultation hours and added daily “special sessions” where students could take part in activities such as space knowledge and art lessons, as well as discussions about the portrayal of science in films, the politics of space, potential careers and paths more.

In addition to previewing life as a Brown student, pre-college programs give students the opportunity to attend class in person and collaborate on projects with their peers.“When we talk to high school students, they assume a synchronized experience where they only sit at the computer with their classmates for long periods of time,” said Marcus. “That’s not what we do, and what it gets for them is pretty extraordinary.”

Every evening there is a one-hour virtual workshop where both online and face-to-face students can take part in the same activity together. Twice a week, students lead student life mentoring groups where students can virtually come together before college to build relationships with their fellow students and discuss strategies for college adjustment and college thriving. Panel discussions give high school students the opportunity to participate in live question-and-answer sessions with current students from diverse backgrounds and experiences. There are also more relaxed social events, resources and virtual academic support, interactive webinars, and more.

For the first time, high school students can take part in the Brown Leadership Institute. The four-week program combines the development of socially responsible leadership with a focused academic degree. Students integrate their learning through course workshops on leadership styles, public speaking, and active listening, as well as developing an action plan project related to their school or home community.

Assuming high school students would get tired of virtual lessons, program directors predicted that about 2,000 students would enroll online this year; the actual number was more than twice that.
