Matthewson & Co., officially known as the Sustainability Project, has established an annual scholarship program to help people in small communities start a new chapter in their lives.
In total, three $ 500 grants were offered in Manitoba, Alberta, and Saskatchewan to individuals in communities with a population of 5,000 or less.
The first scholarship would go to someone who graduated from high school and planned to begin post-secondary education. The second would go to a “nontraditional” student – someone who graduated from high school some time ago and wanted to return to or begin post-secondary education. Finally, the third went to someone who was graduating from high school and wanted to start their own business.
All applicants were required to write an essay that included details such as the person’s career aspirations, but primarily the essay should focus on the community and volunteer experience. This was in line with Matthewson and Co.’s ideals of community building. It should not be scholarships that focus on academics, but rather the commitment and service of the individual in their community.
Anna Beaulieu, who helped set up the scholarship application requirements and screened the various applicants, explained that the scholarships matched everything the company stands for.
“At Matthewson and Company, our … mission is to build communities, so we believe giving back to communities is important.”
Matthewson & Co. is a Carlyle-based company focused on helping small communities thrive. It was created by Lorri Matthewson to fill a void that existed in helping small communities. Most of the time, communities have great potential but are unable to easily access the resources they need to be successful.
Therefore, Matthewson & Co. aims to support small communities through a variety of practical services such as asset management, strategic planning, granting, and community economic development planning. Basically, they are doing what a community economic development officer would, and through appropriate planning and expertise, they are helping small populations achieve their full potential.
In keeping with this vision, Matthewson & Co. decided to give back to small communities by establishing scholarships that would help individuals advance their careers. Lorri Matthewson, who came up with the idea of awarding the scholarships, stated that one of her main reasons for receiving the scholarships was because she felt they should really seed the community again.
“We’ve had … a lot of really positive successes in the last … several years … we’ve been very, very busy – crazy busy – and have been for a while, so it was a way for us to give back what we could.”
Unfortunately, no one has applied for the scholarship for a high school student looking to start a business, but Matthewson & Co. plans to double that scholarship next year hopefully to get more applicants. For the other scholarships, the winners will be announced on July 15th.
