The Department of Education on Friday announced the approval of more than 1,800 student loan waiver applications for borrowers who visited three different institutions.
Borrowers receive 100 percent loan relief totaling nearly $ 55.6 million in student debt relief.
The Biden government approved the claims through the “Borrower Defense for Repayment” or “Borrower Defense” rule to offer forgiveness. The College Act grants the Education Secretary to forgive borrowers who have been defrauded by their college or university.
“Today’s announcement continues the US Department of Education’s commitment to advocating for students whose colleges they have taken advantage of,” Education Secretary Miguel Cardona said in a statement. “The Department will continue to do its part to quickly and fairly screen and approve borrower defense claims so that borrowers can get the relief they need and deserve. We also hope that these approvals serve as a warning to all institutions acting in a similar way that this type of misrepresentation is unacceptable. “
The department approved borrower defense claims for students attending Westwood College, Marinello Schools of Beauty, and the Court Reporting Institute.
For those who attended Westwood College, the department found that the institution “received widespread accounts of students’ ability to earn credits.” The department also noted that Westwood “made widespread, serious misrepresentations among the students that his criminal justice program would lead to careers as police officers in Illinois, particularly the Chicago area.” The department approved more than 1,600 claims worth $ 53 million in relief for former Westwood students.
Similarly, the department found that the Marinello Schools of Beauty “have made widespread, significant misrepresentations about the classes that would be offered in their locations across the country”. The school reportedly left students without an instructor for weeks or months because they did not provide adequate training to pass the required state entrance exams. More than 200 applications valued at approximately $ 2.2 million have been approved for pardon.
The Court Reporting Institute also made “widespread, material misstatement of the time it would take to complete its court reporting program,” according to the department from 1998 until it closed in 2006. Most of the institute’s students were never able to complete the program and were unable to become clerks. Less than six percent of students actually graduated, and those who completed the program took longer than the institution suggested.
The ministry’s announcement comes after the Biden administration has already waived nearly $ 3 billion in student loan waivers since early 2021, delivering on part of President Joe Biden’s campaign promise to ease the burden of student loans on Americans.
