Florida Tech Among Select U.S. Schools in New Global Higher Education Impact Rankings

BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – Florida Tech was one of a handful of US universities featured in the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings 2021.

A list dominated by international schools that highlights the institutions’ success in providing research, administration, outreach, and teaching related to the United Nations 17 Sustainable Development Goals.

The ranking includes a total of 1,115 universities from 94 countries and regions. Florida Tech has been ranked against four Sustainable Development Goals.

Life under water: This measures the universities’ research on life underwater and their education and support for aquatic ecosystems. Florida Tech was one of only 17 US universities – including five from Florida – from a total of 379 entries.

Exploring life underwater and supporting aquatic ecosystems through education and action were key metrics for this category.

Sustainable cities and communities: The focus of this ranking is on sustainability research by the institutions and their internal approaches to sustainability.

Florida Tech was one of only 32 US schools – including five from Florida – among a total of 656 schools assessed. Sustainable practices and sustainability research were the key metrics.

Climate protection: This ranking examines the research done by universities on climate change, their use of energy and their preparations for dealing with the consequences of climate change.

Reduced inequalities: This action highlights universities’ research on social inequalities, their policies of discrimination and their commitment to recruiting staff and students from under-represented groups.

669 universities were rated, including just 33 US institutions, including five in Florida.

Research, first-generation students and students from developing countries, and anti-discrimination measures were among the key metrics for this category.

The University of Manchester in the UK was the best university overall in THE Impact Ranking 2021, with three Australian schools completing the top four.

US universities rank at the top of just two of the 17 UN goals: Climate Protection (University at Buffalo) and Good Health and Well-Being (Oregon Health and Science University.)
