CPAC attendees weigh in: What should parents do about CRT in schools?

DALLAS – Critical Race Theory and How Students, Parents, and Officials Should Handle It is a major topic across the country, from local school council meetings to governor’s mansions.

It was also a major topic at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) in Dallas, with two separate panels dealing with the issue, including a large one for Sunday morning. The discussion, entitled “Class Leader: Why is the Left getting involved with CRT when so many parents disagree?” will feature high profile speakers including David McIntosh of Club for Growth and activist Ian Prior.

Many CPAC attendees also commented on the matter in interviews with Fox News, and shared their thoughts on how students, parents and officials should deal with the controversial teaching in the classroom.

“You should take care of your children and what they say when they get home from school,” Kathleen Caso, president of the Lost Pines Republican Women, told Fox News. “Don’t criticize, listen. If there are things that contradict what they have taught their children, then they have to go to a school management meeting. “

Caso said her group runs a “community committee,” which sends volunteers to school committee meetings to share what they are learning.

“It’s easy. When you care enough about your community and your children, you have to be active. You can’t sit back and relax,” added Caso.

“We all need to read the books our children need to read so we can have an honest conversation with them,” said Kate Bush of Houston.

She added that she is not sure whether passing laws banning CRT will be particularly effective and that close parental involvement is the best choice.

“I don’t know that passing laws does anything at all. In general, many of the laws passed are either ignored or it creates trouble. But we have to get rid of the critical theory,” Bush said.

Julie Pickren, a candidate for the Texas State Board of Education, meanwhile, argued that parents should be careful not only of what their children are saying, but also how schools work internally.

“We have to learn to recognize it in our schools. In schools, you will see it frequently through equity and equity tests,” she said.

“There is a way to fight back,” he said. “And the way to do that is to use your words and use your money. Go to your schools. Don’t send your child to a college indoctrination camp. Use your money that they teach my children in school. “

And Kathy McWhorter, a mother and grandmother from Georgetown, Texas, said parents should consider running for elected office – where education policy is made.

“To be on school boards, to get into elected positions so you know what the curriculum is being taught, and you can take a stand and see if you can change that curriculum and get critical racial theory out of our schools,” she said .

CPAC ends on Sunday with a keynote address by former President Donald Trump. Important topics at the conference and in Trump’s speech are also expected to include immigration, coronavirus health measures and potential major Republican challenges in 2022.
