The New Philadelphia American Legion Tuscarawas Post 139 sponsored five junior high school girls to participate in the 2021 Buckeye Girls State program at the University of Mount Union in Alliance June 13-19. Three girls were from New Philadelphia High School, one from Tuscarawas Central Catholic High School and another from Austintown Fitch High School in Austintown.
This nationwide program is sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary. The first Girls State program was held in Washington, DC in 1947. It is designed to educate the young woman in the duties, privileges, rights and responsibilities of good citizenship. By participating in the process, delegates learn more about city, county, and state government in one week than in a full semester at high school. According to a Post 139 press release, the program is an impartial attempt to teach and instill the love of God and the country among the youth of America.
This year’s delegates were:
Aleia Mei Alsept, 17, is the daughter of Bob and Lisa Alsept and a student at New Philadelphia High School. She is a member of the National Honor Society. Her student activities include three years of Student Council, one year of Vice President of the Class, three years of Key Club, two years of Art Club, three years of Scientific Leadership Club, and three years of Spanish Club. School sports include a soccer team for three years and a swimming team for three years. After school activities include volunteering in the local pantry and homeless shelter. She attended the Impact Days of her parish where schools and other places were cleaned up. She was also a group leader in her community for kindergarten boys and table leader for four years. At BGS, she was elected president of the Hobart City, Thatcher County School Board. After graduating from high school, Aleia plans to study at Ohio University in Miami and study engineering or business administration.
Sylvia Grace Direnzo, 17, is the daughter of Tracey and Stace Direnzo and a student at Austintown Fitch High School in Austintown. She is a member of the National Honor Society. She was vice president of the Spanish club for a year and a member of the university’s swimming team. At BGS, she was elected Public Services Director for Stay, County Underwood, Ohio. After graduating from high school, she plans to attend Kent State University and study political science.
Lilianna YuSha George, 17, is the daughter of Ted and Nancy George and a student at New Philadelphia High School. She is a member of the National Honor Society. Her student activities include the Belle Canto Choir for one year, the Grace Notes Choir for one year, the Spanish Club for three years, the Book Club for two years, the Key Club for three years, for Academic Management for two years and for the Student Council for three years. She was also a member of the track and field team for three years and a church table supervisor from the age of 4-5. At BGS she was elected Country Senator for the Nationalist Party. After high school, Lilianna plans to go to college and study science. She could go into pre-medicine.
Ryann Michelle HyeIm Pipes, 17, is the daughter of Richard and Michelle Pipes and a New Philadelphia High School student. She is a member of the National Honor Society. Her student activities include two years of Spanish Club, two years of Student Council, three years of college football and two years of cheerleading team. She is a member of her church youth group. She is a volunteer with the Tuscarawas County Humane Society. She works in Tuscora Park as a volunteer with the necessary landscaping. At BGS, she was elected as the Ohio Supreme Court Justice. After high school, Ryann plans to go to college and study political science.
• Gina Marie Sciarretti, 17, is the daughter of John and Lori Sciarretti and is a student at Tuscarawas Central Catholic High School. She is a member of the National Honor Society. She was the first and second year student council representative and junior class treasurer. She was a choir member for two years, a school cantor for two years, a school principal for two years and a school servant for two years. She was a pianist during the prayer service for a year. She was a member of the Jugend-2-Jugend for two years and the Pep Club for two years. She played volleyball for three years, basketball for three years, softball for one year, and athletics for two years. She coached TCC Little Saints Biddy for one year, helped bake desserts for the homeless shelter for three years, was the summer school principal for two years, and played the piano at the Hennis Care Center for two years. At BGS she was the person on the Central Committee of Montgomery, Ohio City. She also served as the deputy sheriff for Underwood County. Upon graduation, Gina plans to attend Miami University of Ohio and study biology.
The American Legion and Ohio American Legion Auxiliary have sponsored the Ohio Buckeye Girls State Program for the past 68 years. New Philadelphia American Legion Tuscarawas Post 139 thanked local businesses and individuals who continued to donate funds to the program this year. Without their financial support, local high school students would not have the opportunity to have this educational experience.
