CANYON, Texas (KAMR / KCIT) – West Texas A&M University announced that prospective and graduate students can qualify for free money in two ways – the WT Hope Scholarship and the WT Opportunity Grant, according to a press release from WT’s communications division .

The press release stated that the WT Hope Scholarship “reflects the demographics of the state, particularly minorities, first-generation students, and students from low-income families.” The scholarship offers more than $ 500,000 for freshmen and transfer students.

“Many high school graduates want to continue their education but for a variety of reasons think college just isn’t an option for them,” said Jeffrey Baylor, executive director of admissions. “The Hope scholarship is intended to open up educational opportunities for these students and shows how committed we are to a diverse student body at WT.”

Angela Allen, WT’s Chief Diversity and Inclusion Officer, said the scholarship is an incredible avenue for diverse students interested in WT.

“This scholarship really gives hope to those who are wondering how they will hold out to graduation,” said Allen. “The WT Hope Scholarship hits students where they are, which is consistent with the WT mission to ensure the success of all students.”

According to the press release, the WT’s Hispanic Serving Institution is in its fifth year and is often recruiting for diversity in its student body, faculty, and staff.

The WT Opportunity Grant is aimed at students who do not qualify for a Texas Grant or a Pell Grant, and offers approximately $ 180,000 annually for students in need of financial assistance, the memo said.

“Most middle-class families find a way to get their students into college, but often a financial blow can ruin those plans and students may have to drop out completely,” said Mike Knox, vice president of student engagement, enrollment and success. “If the financial situation of the students changes, they can apply for this scholarship and we can finance the full cost of this semester.”
