Two of Cochrane’s brightest minds have been selected for the Cochrane Rotary Club’s Post-Secondary Scholarship.
COCHRANE— The Cochrane Rotary Club has found two talented students this year as recipients of its $ 10,000 scholarship program.
17-year-old St. Timothy High School student Gaby Eliscupides and 17-year-old Bow Valley High School student Sharllette Manabat both received $ 5,000 that was used for their first year of post-secondary education.
Gaby said she was shocked and relieved to hear that she had won the scholarship.
“To be honest, I was really surprised when my teacher told me about it. I thought I was being considered, I thought I didn’t really win, “she said. “I wasn’t that excited yet, but when I mentioned it to my mom and she said, ‘Well, you won,’ I thought, ‘Do I?'”
Both students were asked to complete an application and write an essay for Rotary club review.
Gaby said she wrote in her application essay about her future goals, contributions to the community, and what she plans to do with her degree.
Gaby plans to graduate from the University of Calgary’s Haskane School of Business with a degree in business studies with an emphasis on entrepreneurship and innovation. She hopes to start a business in the Philippines one day.
“My parents taught me English as a mother tongue, so I understand the language there, but I can’t really speak it. I feel like going back there and getting acquainted with the culture and the language again is very important to me as a Filipino person who was born there, ”she said.
Gaby says she thinks the Bachelor of Commerce degree is versatile and will open many doors for her. While she’s still not sure which industry she wants to be in, she knows she wants to be her own boss.
“Running my own business is something I’ve always wanted to do or be the boss of something. I’ve always liked leadership roles, and that’s where I feel most comfortable, ”she said.
She added that she hoped for more clarity about her future while studying as she was exposed to new ideas and industries.
Sharlette said receiving the scholarship came as a surprise to her too.
“I was shocked when I got it. I got the impression that if I got them or not I would get the results back later, so when I got the email I chose I think it was early in the day, I didn’t fully process it when I saw the email notification on my phone, she said.
Bow Valley High School, Sharllette explained, has a scholarship program where staff collect the various scholarship opportunities available and help students apply.
Sharlette said she wrote about her dream of becoming an engineer in her application essay.
“I talked about wanting to be an engineer. I’ve wanted to be one for a long time, and the University of Calgary has a biomedical engineering program that I’m very interested in. My mom works in the health industry and my personal skills related to school are math and science areas, I’m very interested in these areas so I thought the BioMed technique would be right for me, ”she said.
Sharllette said she always knew she wanted to be in engineering, so she made sure she took every science class that was available to her in high school.
She added that she is very much looking forward to studying because it is of personal interest to her.
Receiving the scholarship was a great relief, because the university is an enormous effort for a young person.
“I live in a single parent household and there are some difficulties funding my education, so a scholarship this size would have been an incredible help,” she said.
She said she would like to use her degree to find a job with a diagnostic and imaging technology company to improve the doctor’s ability to make accurate diagnoses and improve overall patient care.
Both students said they are grateful to the Cochrane Rotary Club for their assistance in preparing for the next chapter in their lives.
