No jobs, no placements: Students take up professional, skill development courses with hope to get employed

Dipika Sharma, a senior student at the Indira Institute of Mass Communication, has been looking for jobs for some time, but opportunities are tight. As such, she enrolled in a professional course in the hopes that it might help her find a job.

“I took digital marketing courses online to improve my resume. If the future is too tense for me, I listen to music, watch films, work out or help my family around the house, ”she says.

However, Dipika is not the only one.

With students staying at home after the lockdowns caused by Covid, many have started using their free time to acquire skills that they hope will help them get placed in a market that is very much few jobs exist.

“One of the things that really preoccupies the youth right now is a stable future with a job that pays decently,” says Kunal Singh, a senior student at KJ Somaiya College in Mumbai. He is very concerned about the country’s unemployment rate and has enrolled in auditing classes for a secure future.

Saakshi Jadav, a freelance writer and graduate of the Indira Institute in Pune, talks about how interpersonal and communication skills have helped her attract many clients overseas over time. “I tried to get out of my comfort zone and connect with freelance writers on zoom calls and webinars to understand how the market works. Digital Marketing is the second course I enrolled in, ”she said. She added that despite the falling market chart, freelance work was not badly affected and she was able to add 3 more people to jobs.

Priyanka Lalwani, 3rd year BBA student at the Symbiosis Center for Management Studies, also tells a story that sheds light on the gloomy job scenario in our country. “Symbiosis has a reputation for having good placement opportunities, but this time only 110 out of 260 students were referred,” she said. Despite being one of the 110 to get a job, she says it was a lot harder this year than it was before, adding that she took 10 tests herself and was only selected in 2.

“Some of my friends are trying to do master classes. This is due to the panic situation in the country and the uncertainty that students have on their minds. There are many who take jobs that don’t even pay 15,000 rupees a month, ”she added.

However, there are also students who have started their own YouTube channel or are learning to invest in the stock market to take advantage of this free time.

Siddhart Sarang, a sophomore at Satyawati College at Delhi University who is staying in Kothrud, is using this to research climate issues. He has had a keen interest in climate studies since he was in Class VII. “I wrote a few articles on environmental issues, but the company didn’t pay me as promised. Even so, money won’t stop me from writing and campaigning. I will keep trying to make a change, ”he says.

Likewise, Mridul Age, an MBA student from Amity Global Business School, has taken a number of certified courses – from effective communication to strategic management – to develop new skills.
