Do a majority of Americans really believe that all student loan borrowers should cancel their student loans?
Here’s what you need to know.

The ongoing debate over student loan termination has attracted opinions from all corners. Some say widespread student loan cancellation is an essential policy that will boost the economy, reduce inequalities, and help student loan borrowers raise families, buy a home, and save for retirement. Others say the student loan termination is a massive transfer of assets borne by federal taxpayers that is unfair to the 80% of adult Americans who either have no student loans or have not attended college. A new poll, fueling the fire, claims that 52% of Americans support “blanket lending for all borrowers.” However, the results are misleading. Here’s why.
Termination of the student loan: existing policies
First, let’s start with the original survey, which was posted on a website and included 3,633 people (who were not weighted by demographics) and which does not appear to be a scientific survey.

- Temporary loan waiver due to the pandemic
- Lending to public servants
- Loan waiver for people with low incomes and high levels of debt
- Lump-sum loan waiver for all borrowers
- I don’t think the federal government should waive a loan. “
First, the survey asks respondents to choose an option for the United States. However, the choices are a mix of existing student loan cancellation guidelines and suggestions. For example, the federal government is already offering a temporary waiver of student loans during the Covid 19 pandemic. Under the Cares Act – the $ 2.2 trillion stimulus package – Congress suspended federal student loan payments, fixed student loan interest rates at 0%, and stopped recovering federal student loan defaults. (Biden may extend this student loan facility beyond September 30, 2021). As a result, student loan borrowers will be canceled more than $ 90 billion in student loans during the Covid-19 pandemic, according to the U.S. Department of Education. The second answer asks respondents whether the US should accept “public sector lending”. The Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program is an existing program that helps student loan borrowers working for a qualified public service or nonprofit employer to cancel student loans. Biden’s student loan agreement plans support both guidelines. As president, Biden extended the student loan relief under the Cares Act, which benefited student loan borrowers approximately $ 5 billion each month. This is on top of the $ 3 billion student loan that Biden has now canceled as president. Biden also supports helping student loan borrowers under the Government Loan Relief Program, which waives up to $ 50,000 in student loan waivers after five years of service instead of the previous 10 years. Another proposal is for civil servants to be automatically waived loans after 10 years of service without the requirements of the existing program.
Student Loan Remission: Student loan cancellation is merged in several ways
Second, the choices are a mix of whether to get a student loan waiver, who should qualify for a student loan waiver, and when to get a student loan waiver. In the last answer, the respondents are asked, for example, whether the federal government should cut student loans at all. The second answer (officials), the third answer (student loan borrowers with a high debt-to-income ratio), and the fourth answer (all student loan borrowers) discuss who is eligible for student loan waiver. The first answer does not describe who should be waived a student loan or whether they should waive a student loan. Rather, the first reaction – cancellation of the student loan during the Covid-19 pandemic – discusses when student loan borrowers should receive a cancellation of the student loan.
The majority of Americans want all student loan debt canceled?
Third, the term “lump sum loan waiver for all borrowers” is a vague term. Does this mean an extensive cancellation of the student loan? Does this mean that every student loan borrower should get a student loan waiver? Does this mean that every student loan borrower should be waived all student loans? Well, different news outlets described the results in different ways. One outlet wrote that the majority of Americans want to cancel all student loan debt. Another outlet wrote that “lump-sum student loan forgiveness” does not apply to all student loan debts, but to all student loan borrowers. However, that point of sale also states that “a large number of Americans – perhaps a majority – support even greater debt payments” than $ 50,000 in student loans.
Do Americans Help Biden Get Student Loans?
This poll comes at a time when the US Supreme Court recently denied Certiorari for canceling student loans. Interestingly, the results of this survey are similar to a survey by Data For Progress last year. The survey asked respondents several questions, including “Should Every Student Loan Borrower Get $ 50,000 Student Loan Waiver?” And “Should All Student Loans Be Canceled?” The survey found that 52% of the first question answered yes and 44% % answered yes to the second question. These numbers speak relatively strongly in favor of a significant cancellation of the student loan. However, the President and Members of Congress have taken a very different approach to policy making. Biden’s student loan forgiveness plan focuses on student loan cancellation of $ 10,000, which is likely to only apply to federal student loan borrowers. Senators Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) and Chuck Schumer (D-NY) would limit student loan issuance only to federal student loans and only to student borrowers who earn less than $ 125,000 per year. In either case, it is very different from allowing each student loan borrower to cancel the student loan or cancel all student loan debts, as Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) has suggested. Under both the Biden Student Loan Cancellation and the Warren-Schumer Plan, these student loan borrowers may not be able to receive termination of the student loan. With public hearings on student loans going on today, changes in student loan issuance and student loan cancellation may be on the horizon. The question is, how much does public opinion influence policymakers and student loans will be canceled or if student loan cancellation will be canceled.
