Mitchell Board of Education to consider budget supplements

The meeting is scheduled to begin at 5:00 p.m. in the Mitchell Career & Technical Education Academy’s common room.

Joe Graves, superintendent of the Mitchell School District, said on the agenda items that budget additions are not uncommon for a school district the size of Mitchell and the recent COVID-19 pandemic threw schools a series of curveballs that caused inevitable spikes in spending.

“In a district our size, there are budget increases every year. The ‘pandemic year’ in particular turned out to be one with an unusually high number of such, ”said Graves.

Under state law, school district spending must be approved by the education committee as part of the budget process. This usually means that the expenses are covered by the budget approved annually by the board of directors. Occasionally, considerable additional effort is required, which the board can approve in advance by making a budget change.

If significant additional effort is required that becomes apparent at or shortly before the budget is closed, a budget supplement is required. A budget addendum is the formal recognition of the overspending by the board of directors.

For K-12, the board will add $ 842,665 in the General Fund, $ 447,000 in the Capital Expenditure Fund, $ 20,000 in the Special Education Fund, $ 2,000 in the Driver Education Fund, and $ 250,000 in the Food Service Fund in the To consider.

Most of the budget supplements have to do with spending increases due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Graves said.

The Board is expected to hear public contributions to the 2021-22 budget and then consider approving the budget itself. The assumed annual budget would be $ 20,583,158 in the General Fund, $ 4,572,770 in the Capital Expenditure Fund, $ 2,086,469 in the Food Service Fund, $ 5,056,047 in the Special Education Fund, and $ 25,392,215 in the Mitchell Technical College combined post-secondary fund .

The tax charges would be as follows: General Fund, $ 1.409 per $ 1,000 total valuation (maximum charges allowed); Special Education Fund, $ 1,670 per $ 1,000 total rating (maximum allowed); Capital spending fund, $ 4,550,000 in tax required (or maximum amount that can be raised). The Executive Board is expected to consider the following personnel changes:

• The New Certified Hire of Kendra Clark, 7th Assistant to the Girls’ Basketball Coach, $ 1,857; Kimberly Bruguier, assistant marching band, $ 2,040; and Bethan Amundson, drummer, $ 2,346. All new certified employees will take effect in the 2021-22 school year.
