Middlesex Community College students take first, second at DECA

Middlesex Community College students won first and second place in their categories in the recent DECA competition in Massachusetts in 2021.

The competition offers students who specialize in marketing, finance, hospitality, and management the opportunity to compete against other local universities.

Vikram Sharma, Associate Professor of Business Administration, guided three Middlesex students through their events. Participation in the event in an online format presented an additional challenge to the competition for the students, according to Sharma.

“We’ve done well in the past, but this year feels special as it really shows that our students can withstand the pressures of the pandemic and so many other challenges,” Sharma said. “Despite these opportunities, our students worked hard and were successful at their events.”

Middlesex was the only community college among the participating four-year colleges and universities.

“It’s very inspiring and motivating for me as a faculty member,” he said. “It feels great that we are preparing our students for the real world. Participating in this competition is also a great networking opportunity, makes our students great team players, and imparts strong leadership and communication skills. “

Brian Rosa from Burlington won first place in the individual financial accounting competition against students from three other colleges.

Tyler Galvin and Natalie Mayo finished second in the team event of the balance sheet analysis against four other teams.

In his individual competition, Rosa had to check the balance sheet of a case study and then present his work to two jurors who acted as owners.

“Employers essentially invest in you to grow their business,” he said. “By doing things like the measure. Having DECA competition on your resume shows employers that you are a worthwhile hire and investment as you go above and beyond in your related field and are likely to be a top performer for the employer when hired. ” “

This is the second year Galvin has attended DECA. As President of the Business and Economics Club, the Chelmsford resident helped Sharma plan MCC’s participation in the competition.

As a team, Galvin and Mayo prepared for their presentation by working on previous case studies. For their event, they had 24 hours to go through the case study and develop a recommendation for how to proceed.

Mayo, a resident of Dracut, is a math tutor at the MCC’s Academic Centers for Enrichment. She also participates in the MCC’s theater program and business club.

Virtual open day

As part of the Virtual Open House Summer Series, the MCC is organizing a session on Wednesday, June 30th from 10 am to 12 noon on the topic of “New Students – Get Ready for Autumn!”. Accepted and prospective students and their families learn about the MCC’s flexible course schedules, accessible resources, affordable tuition, and more.

Representatives from departments like Admissions, Student Accounts, and Career Services will talk about how accepted and prospective students can position themselves successfully from day one at college.
