Karnataka to consider opening higher education institutions on experts advice

BENGALURU: Karnataka Prime Minister BS Yediyurappa said Tuesday the government would consider closing colleges after vaccinating students and teachers following the recommendations of Dr. Devi Shetty-led expert committee on the possible third COVID-19 wave. He said the committee recommended speeding up vaccinations as vaccines are the solution to COVID control.

“The committee supported the government’s announced easing of COVID restrictions and proposed opening educational institutions in the coming days, starting with colleges, after vaccination,” said Yediyurappa.

Speaking to reporters after meeting the committee, regarding the opening of schools and colleges, he said the committee had proposed giving vaccination priority to students and teachers in order to begin classes gradually by putting colleges over for students first Reopened 18 years after being vaccinated.

“The government is considering gradually opening universities after students and teachers have been vaccinated,” the prime minister said when asked.

There has been no discussion about opening schools as those under 18 have not yet been vaccinated and clinical trials of their vaccination are ongoing.

The Karnataka government recently had a 13-person committee of experts led by the renowned cardiologist and founder of Narayana Health Dr. Devi Shetty formed to analyze and advise a possible third Covid-19 wave in Karnataka.

The committee met the Prime Minister today and presented an interim report.

“We had extensive discussions about the preparations for the third wave of COVID. It is said that children will be infected in greater numbers during the third wave, and with that in mind, the committee made some recommendations, ”said Yediyurappa.

Listed some of the committee’s recommendations, the Prime Minister said it had called for the establishment of HDU, intensive care units for children in Taluk and district hospitals and also in medical university hospitals, as well as the establishment of children’s hospitals.

The committee has made some suggestions aimed at securing human and financial resources and getting expert help to control the third wave, he said.

This includes help from various medical organizations, the elimination of the lack of doctors and nurses, support from voluntary organizations, the mobilization of resources with the help of corporations and, above all, public participation.

Recalling that the committee has proposed making malnutrition a priority, the CM said it had proposed providing mental health services in every hospital to improve the morale of children infected with COVID.

Among other things, she made certain recommendations to remedy the lack of oxygen.
