FSU launches online hub of financial literacy tools for students

Ask students what their biggest concern is, and college costs are sure to be in the top 5 of the answers.

Florida State University recognizes that affordability is key to upgrading degrees and attracting students of first generation and low socioeconomic status, along with access to resources that provide students with access to resources that enhance financial literacy Study and improve in life after graduation.

To improve student financial literacy, FSU has set up financialsuccess.fsu.edu, an online hub of financial literacy tools for students. The comprehensive website provides resources on college payments, planning and budgeting, banking and credit, investing, and insurance and taxation. It also provides information on financial literacy courses and training programs, events, and outside resources.

Provost Sally McRorie, who sponsored the project, recognized the need to consolidate and expand the information available to current and future FSU students.

“It doesn’t matter how much information we have for our students if they can’t find it,” she said. “We wanted to create a place where they can acquire these important life skills and insights.”

The new online financial success hub is an extension of FSU’s longstanding student success initiative, said Associate Provost Rick Burnette, who led the project.

“FSU has continuously expanded its student success efforts to prepare students to master the college experience and successfully transition into their post-graduate life, and financial success is an integral part of that,” said Burnette. “Students have increased needs and expectations of graduation with skills that may not always be taught in the classroom.”

The hub provides easy access to the financial literacy badge programs at FSU, which students can use to document the skills and experience gained through these courses for future employers.

Live Well Financially, a badge course offered by the Center for Health Advocacy and Wellness (CHAW) as part of the Live Well FSU program, covers a variety of topics including student loan debt management, credit card usage, and other financial wellness -Subjects.

“Financial wellbeing is one of nine dimensions of our holistic Live Well FSU program that helps students understand and adopt healthy lifestyles,” said Amy Hecht, vice president, student affairs.

The Career Center offers the Fiscally Fit and ProfessioNole Ready badges, which are aimed at increasing financial literacy and developing professional skills.

In addition, the hub provides information from the Student Support Offices and Student Business Services on how to pay for tuition and secure study grants, scholarships, grants and loans.

Javier Cuevas, a newcomer from Tampa, worked with Burnette on the project as part of the InternFSU program. Cuevas researched the best financial education programs in the country, organized the information into thematic sections, and modeled the website’s original designs. He worked with the project leaders for each topic and assisted university communications in curating the content for presentation on the website.

“Without Javi’s project management, design and editing skills, this project would not have been completed so quickly,” said Myrna Hoover, director of the Career Center that oversees the InternFSU program. “The project also provided Javi with a tangible work artefact to showcase his skills to future employers.”

Cuevas said the project was an excellent hands-on way to learn skills relevant to his career goals.

“My interest in the project management aspect of the internship gave me an idea of ​​what I would like to do after college and I can now focus on taking the right steps in my education to get into the field,” he said .
