A donation of $ 40 million from a nationally renowned philanthropist and several large donations from the South Florida community together recognize the impact and even greater potential of the FIU
An exceptional year of philanthropy in support of the FIU has ensured a bright future for the university, its students and all of South Florida.
Generous donations in recognition of the FIU’s position as a critical pedagogue in the region and a national pioneer in promoting social mobility will change the university for the next few decades and further sharpen its profile at home and abroad.
“We are grateful to every donor who supports the FIU’s mission and has contributed to this unprecedented year of fundraising at our FIU,” said Howard Lipman, CEO of the FIU Foundation, Inc. “It’s both humbling and empowering to have you behind to have our efforts to increase student success and advance research excellence. “
The FIU Foundation exceeded its fundraising goal for fiscal year 2020-2021 by raising nearly $ 112 million and supporting the annual goal of $ 79 million. This success is the third record year in a row for the FIU Foundation. To date, the multi-year Next Horizon campaign has raised a total of $ 679 million for the $ 750 million goal.
Transform the student experience
Philanthropist and author MacKenzie Scott and husband Dan Jewett announced a $ 40 million gift to the FIU in mid-June. The unsolicited, unrestricted funds are used to promote academic success.
“Higher education is a proven route to opportunity, so we looked for two- and four-year institutions that successfully train students from chronically underserved communities,” Scott wrote in her announcement. According to an analysis published by Excelencia in Education, the FIU is the leading institution in the United States in enrolling and graduating Spanish American students with bachelor’s degrees.

The university has announced far-reaching plans to use the money to strengthen programs that focus on academic and professional support. These include the STEM Transformation Institute, which prepares students for work or teaching in the fields of natural sciences, technology, engineering and medicine; the Mastery Math Lab, which offers an alternative to traditional classroom learning; and the Connect4Success partnerships that lead students who have earned an associate degree through the state college system to a bachelor’s degree at the FIU. Strengthening the role of the FIU in the Miami tech movement
A $ 10 million investment from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation will strengthen the FIU’s role in the emerging technology industry in South Florida. The newly renamed Knight Foundation School of Computing and Information Sciences – already a leader in the region in recruiting technical graduates – is expanding to meet the growing need for skilled staff as the region experiences a technology boom.
The Knight Foundation donation serves as a catalyst for the FIU’s continued contribution to the local technology ecosystem by attracting top faculty researchers in areas such as artificial intelligence, intelligent robotics, bioinformatics, bio-devices and digital forensics, and by strengthening collaboration with industry. The school is a nationwide leader in federal research funding for computer science. Overall, the university is committed to investing more than $ 100 million in the effort over the next 10 years, including the construction of a new building for advanced computers on the Modesto A. A center to celebrate and preserve the Cuban heritage
A prominent Cuban-American businessman made a $ 5 million donation in support of CasaCuba, the university’s center for celebrating and preserving Cuban culture and studying Cuban affairs.
On behalf of his family, Jorge Mas announced that the contribution will help build a 57,000 square meter facility on the Modesto A. Maidique campus. The iconic cultural center will incorporate the latest technology to enable interactive and digital experiences. CasaCuba will host the FIU’s existing Cuban research institute and promote engaging discussions that bring together top scientists, policy makers and business leaders from around the world. The facility will feature galleries for a wide range of exhibits as well as a state-of-the-art venue for events, courses, performances and dynamic programs. A forum for civic leadership
The Maurice A. Ferré Foundation has donated $ 2 million and is committed to raising more than 3.5 million additional funds over the coming years to support the Maurice A. Ferré Institute for Civic Leadership at the Steven J. Green School of International & & Public Affairs.
The new institute pays tribute to the life and work of its late namesake, who was Mayor of Miami from 1973 to 1985, and will address the critical issues of preparing diverse leaders for public service, increasing civic participation for stronger democracy, and promoting social justice deal.
The Ferré Institute will be housed in the Green School’s Phase II building, which is currently under construction. Maurice Ferré’s extensive personal library and collection of papers, awards and other artifacts from his life in the public service are housed in the Special Collections and University Archives Department of the Steven and Dorothea Green Library.
