FITCHBURG – Apart from “cryptocurrency”, the term “cybersecurity” is perhaps the biggest buzzword at the moment. But unlike crypto, the need for cybersecurity and the entire industry that supports it will only continue to grow, according to a university press release.
In fact, according to the Massachusetts Technology Collaborative, it is “the fastest growing technology sector in the world,” and it is likely to affect many aspects of our daily lives and the world we live in from now on, according to the university.

CRS works with Fitchburg State University’s Center for Professional Studies on its comprehensive cybersecurity programs, according to the university.
In addition to the cybersecurity concentration offered in the Fitchburg State undergraduate program as part of the Computer Information Systems major, the CPS is now offering professional cybersecurity continuing education courses to assist local businesses, industry leaders, organizations and cyber startups with their cybersecurity needs.

“We have now reached a point where cyberattacks have become the new normal,” Kazi continued. “Just as COVID-19 has affected all of our lives and steps have been taken to limit its impact, the same principles must now be applied in the defense against cybercrime. These tactics need to gain a foothold not only in business and government, but also in education. Massachusetts is fortunate to have an institution like Fitchburg State that bridges the void in cybersecurity education by incorporating this important curriculum into their extensive course catalog. Now students, businesses and government agencies can take steps to improve their knowledge and ability to ward off the inevitable cybercrimes that will continue to plague our lives. “
Fitchburg State’s cybersecurity courses provide students with an exciting hands-on experience in their state-of-the-art cyber space where students enter simulated real-world cyber attack scenarios. These 100% online training courses are led by instructors who are cyber industry veterans and provide valuable insights and lessons on applying the curriculum to practice in the workplace.
The four-course program aims to advance the cyber careers of anyone who enrolls and offers unique training to help students learn how to respond to threats in a training environment rather than while at work. Cyber offerings are actively used in colleges, military agencies, government agencies and private companies to focus on building competencies, skills and preparation for cybersecurity education. Ranges are also essential for replicating institutional infrastructures for cybersecurity testing and for the secure advancement of cybersecurity research, the press release said.
In 2020, (ISC) 2, an international not-for-profit organization dedicated to conducting in-depth research into the cybersecurity profession, conducted a cybersecurity workforce study and found that organizations that find a way to train their employees “in all Phases ”, have a solid structure and support teams.
The study found that 63% of cybersecurity professionals are seeking or planning additional security-related certification. When it comes to cybersecurity, it’s important to keep up with the latest technology. Therefore, many in the industry see the importance of additional courses in their field and many acquire multiple qualifications over the course of their careers, the press release said.
The Commonwealth is consistently ranked among the fastest growing states for new IT firms and expansion into cyberspace, reported the Massachusetts Technology Collaborative.
In fact, there are over 170 companies in Massachusetts that are solely focused on cybersecurity products and services. Over the past few years, both the New York Times and Forbes have cited Cybersecurity Ventures’ estimate that there is currently an estimated shortage of approximately 3.5 million cybersecurity professionals, and although we have developed technologies to help us keep global data safer, there is really no substitute for highly qualified and trained professionals.
This means that, according to the university, there are a growing number of opportunities and potential for job seekers and those looking to move forward in cybersecurity.
