College Scholarships: Congratulations to Manith Humchad of Brecksville-Broadview High School and 10 other Northeast Ohio high school graduates who are each receiving a $ 2,000 college scholarship through the Cleveland Cavaliers and Huntington Scholarship Program 2021.
This is the 30th year of the scholarship program, which was launched to support high performing students in their post-secondary education.
This school year has been a unique challenge for students and educators grappling with virtual distance learning and social segregation as school systems across the country grappled with the disruption caused by a global pandemic.
However, a bright light of hope for the future shone in the 500-word essays that the students submitted as part of the application process. The theme was, “What is the most important lesson you have learned so far in your life, and how do you plan to apply that lesson in the future?”
In addition to essay submission, the criteria for receiving the Cavaliers / Huntington Scholarship are based on applicants performing a high level of service in their community and submitting a high school transcript, ACT, and / or SAT scores (if from of the accredited school). planned participation) and a letter of recommendation.
The scholarship application committee reviewed more than 500 submissions, from which 20 semi-finalists were selected and interviewed by a jury before the scholarships were awarded to the 11 finalists. The panel included members of the Cavaliers Organization, Huntington’s and community leaders.
“Huntington is proud to join the Cleveland Cavaliers to invest in the future of these outstanding students,” said Julie Tutkovics, Huntington’s chief marketing and communications officer. “Their pursuit of excellence during the pandemic puts them in a good position to thrive in their academic careers and their continued support for our communities makes them role models for future generations of leaders.
“Huntington welcomes these well-deserved, high-performing students as they begin their post-secondary studies.”
“Promoting the importance of education is a pillar of our youth work in our community, and we are proud to work with Huntington to provide this year’s grant recipients the opportunity to learn while pursuing their aspirations and dreams for the future,” said Len Komoroski, CEO of the Cleveland Cavaliers and Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse.
The Cavaliers and Huntington hosted an awards banquet for the students and their families on May 26 at the Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse.
