THE Covid-19 pandemic has had a negative financial impact on many Malaysians.
These include numerous school leavers who are faced with uncertainties about their university planning, as many of the godparents are parents whose financial situation has been affected by the pandemic.
As such, Tunku Abdul Rahman University College (TAR UC) offers various types of financial aid to students to help them through these troubled times.
First up is TAR UC’s Prihatin Flexi Payment Plan, which was launched this year and offers greater flexibility in paying fees for the first semester.
Students can make an initial payment of RM 263 to begin their tertiary education at TAR UC, and the remainder can be paid in installments up to the fifth or ninth week of study, depending on the course.
This offer is aimed at students who have received their admission offer for basic, diploma and bachelor’s degree programs for the June / September / November 2021 degree programs.
For Foundation students for the June / September 2021 degree programs, they have the flexibility to pay all semester fees in installments, as they are not entitled to PTPTN.
Students in need can also receive financial support through the TAR UC Student Loan Fund.
To date, there are 49 interest-free revolving student loan funds that students can apply for, with the loan covering all tuition fees for the recipients.
Since its inception in 1979, the TAR UC Student Loan Fund has disbursed 13,293 loans totaling almost RM 43 million.
There are also scholarships and grants for qualified students.
These include The Star Education Fund, Sin Chew Daily Education Fund, Nanyang Tertiary Education Fund, TAR UC – TAA Scholarship, TAR UC – TAA Scholarship (Top Glove), TAR UC Jinbodhi Scholarship, TAR UC Sports Scholarship, and State / National Player Scholarship .
In addition, there are also other outside grants and grants from corporations and philanthropic organizations to help deserving TAR UC students continue their studies, such as Kuok Foundation Study Grants, OSK Foundation Scholarship, CIMB Asean Scholarship, and Lion-Parkson Foundation Scholarship.
High-performing students can benefit from the TAR UC Merit Scholarship.
The generous scholarship with up to 100% waiver of tuition fees is automatically awarded according to study performance.
Since 1997, 26,366 students have received the performance scholarship totaling approximately RM138 million.
TAR UC also offers parents with two or more children studying at TAR UC financial incentives such as the sibling discount as additional support.
As part of the sibling discount, students who are enrolling for the first time and studying with siblings who are required to pay contributions in the same semester can receive a discount of RM 1,000 on the tuition fee for the first semester.
Among the many recipients of TAR UC grant is Lee Rong Cherng, a Bachelor of Quantity Surveying (Hons) student who came from a single family.
“My mother is the only breadwinner and earns RM 2,000 a month.
“In addition to me, two other siblings have to be looked after.
“When I saw how difficult it was for my mother, I took a part-time job while studying and earned around RM 800. I wanted to tell my mother about it, but then she died.
“When the TAR UC Jinbodhi Scholarship was introduced, I felt like I had a second chance in life,” he said.
Applications for June / September / November 2021 are now possible.
