Introducing students and the community to cyber careers
Elk Grove, California – The city of Elk Grove recently honored Franklin High School high school students who won the 2021 NorCalCyber Mayors Cup in the Sacramento area. As part of the Mayors Cup competition, Elk Grove Mayor Bobbie Singh-Allen was presented with the Mayors Cup trophy earlier in the day by the Anime Club team members.
A one day event. This year’s NorCalCyber Mayors Cup took place virtually due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The NorCalCyber Mayors Cup raises awareness of cybersecurity careers and offers students the opportunity to learn in a team. This year’s event was hosted by the Sacramento County Office of Education and the Regional Consortium of California Community Colleges North Far North. The event was organized by SynED, a national not-for-profit organization that is identifying new best practices for effective communication between employers, job seekers and education providers.

Four mayors attended the event, including Sacramento Mayor Darrell Steinberg. He was accompanied by Andrew Coolidge from Chico, Jill Gayaldo from Rocklin and Gloria Partida from Davis. The competitive “game” was hosted on the Cyber Skyline platform, the same platform used by the popular National Cyber League (NCL).
“There is a great need for more cybersecurity professionals and people with knowledge of the field,” Sacramento County’s Superintendent of Schools David Gordon said in an April 17 address to students like you. … They’re on the verge of one new frontier, and the rest of us are counting on you to lead us there safely, and I really appreciate your taking on this challenge. “
Top high school team
For the Greater Sacramento Region, the Mayors Cup, which was awarded to the best high school team, was awarded to the Franklin High School Anime Club, under the direction of Coach Christopher Shuping of Elk Grove, CA.
The Franklin High School Anime Club team included Carmen Jimenez, Jason Huang, Mahmood Ikram, Kevin Lu, Ethan Ho, and Eric Lee.
“What I like about the Mayors Cup is that it brings everyone together,” said Sean McNally, cybersecurity competition coordinator for the Elk Grove Unified School District. “It brings the student, the teacher, the parents, the principal. It brings the superintendent, it brings government officials like the mayor around one table, and for a while we all speak the same language. We all learn what we need to do better. “
“Maintaining this annual Mayors Cup,” added McNally, “allows us to reconsider – why do we need this, why is it so important, and why is it so important for all ages in every industry? For the community in general, it enables this conversation between the child and the parents, between the child and the educator, between the educator and the district official, and then you can also involve the local government or media. ”

Just to see Mayor Steinberg greet the students on Saturday, April 17th, it was also his weekend and the children’s weekend. The mayor of the city of the winning team will keep an eternal mayor’s cup trophy until the next competition. The NorCalCyber Mayors Cup spanned two regions that competed separately, the Greater Sacramento Region and the Far North Region. For the first, second and third place medals were awarded to students in the middle, upper and upper grades.
In the month before the Saturday competition, weekly “Live @ 5” events were held with speakers from academia, companies, the cybersecurity industry, the community and state and local government, as well as students and parents. Up to 50 attendees each week listened to speakers discuss the importance of cybersecurity careers and how students can begin their journey to exciting, well-paying careers with the technical education pathway of the region’s cybersecurity careers.
As many Live @ 5 speakers pointed out, most jobs of the future will require at least a basic understanding of cybersecurity. The increasingly digitized world in which we live and the associated threats are already placing great emphasis on education and training in the field of cybersecurity.
The NorCalCyber Mayors Cup also serves to raise the importance of cybersecurity education in today’s increasingly tech-heavy world, and to bring community leaders and stakeholders together in a way that draws attention to the issue.
