College enrollments continue to decline, falling 5% this spring, according to the National Student Clearinghouse. The 5% means 725,000 fewer students.
According to the National Center of Educational Statistics, the average number of students for each faculty member is 16. There is no institution in North Dakota with such a low student-to-faculty ratio.
If the numbers are believable, the drop in 725,000 students represents a large number of faculty salaries that are no longer flowing through the local economy.
Small college salaries
The salaries of the faculties are disproportionately more important in the small university towns than in the business circles of the two research university towns.
North Dakota has used a variety of strategies to maintain or increase student numbers.
The main strategy is to encourage overseas students to come to North Dakota. This has proven to be particularly successful for the two top institutions, both of which have a large proportion of their students from abroad or abroad.
While some lawmakers believe this means expanding charity at the expense of North Dakota taxpayers, maintaining full student numbers brings all possible benefits to the institutions and the business community

According to a report by National Public Radio’s Elissa Nadworny, the downward trend began nationwide in 2012, the same year that North Dakota began to slide.
Up to this point, North Dakota had been able to refine the decline without significantly disrupting the flow of education in the institutions. But bad days are ahead.
The number of faculty needed to teach 10,000 fewer students will be reduced. If the decline continues nationwide, the job market will soon be filled with doctoral students from educational institutions. There is nothing about North Dakota institutions to suggest the state is being exempted from the national trend.
Impact of the career academy
We have a caveat to make. The $ 70 million program for “Career Academies” created by the recent legislature should incorporate new bodies into new post-high school institutions.
This closes a known gap in the country’s education system and also attracts university students who prefer to learn technical skills.
With 11 institutions struggling to expand or survive, each institution has tried to add disciplines to justify the present or larger faculties. In the impending tightening of the belt, many of these degree programs will not attract enough students to warrant high faculty salaries.
Since too many institutions offer too many programs for too few students, we can be sure that institutional competition will shape the declining days.
No solution online
Every institution has a jubilant section of alumni, fans, and business people. In the war among the “North Dakota 11” The political pressure will be enormous when the allocation of resources takes place at the state level.
While some hope online courses will ease the pressures of downsizing, they have limitations. Some courses can be effectively taught online; others cannot. Real life experiences of campus life are lost. Some faculties can teach online; some cannot. Some students want to be at least 120 km outside of town, but they will “on-line” in their homes.
I have to be transparent. I got all of my high school education through correspondence, which is no different than being tied to a computer. My social development has suffered. I never caught up.
