BENTONVILLE – Northwest Arkansas Community College plans to fully roll out the Amazon Web Services Academy curriculum by June 2022, administrators said.
Tim Cornelius, Vice President for Vocational Education and Training, gave a presentation on the curriculum at the monthly meeting of the Board of Trustees on Monday.
Mark Scott, secretary, and Joe Spivey, board member, were absent.
College began the Amazon Web Services curriculum in the 2020-21 school year with basic, advanced IT infrastructure and data analysis courses, Cornelius said. Amazon Web Services offers a total of 23 courses, according to the service’s website.
According to Cornelius, Amazon began offering IT infrastructure services to companies in the form of web services in 2006, now commonly known as cloud computing.
The college is slowly introducing the cloud computing curriculum to introduce the region to the field of study, he said.
Cloud training is important to northwest Arkansas, Cornelius said, noting that just last week there were about 55 jobs available in the region at about $ 180,000 a year.
There is also a national year-over-year growth rate of 121% for job postings that include cloud computing, he said.
“It’s growing so fast,” said Cornelius. “These jobs are there.”
Many cloud computing jobs allow people to work locally for companies around the world, he said.
“Remote work is here to stay,” said Cornelius. “If you can work from anywhere, why not work from here?”
NWACC offers the only accredited Amazon Web Services Academy in Arkansas, he said.
The courses are offered virtually, said Cornelius.
Course duration varies, and current NWACC cloud computing courses range from $ 695 to $ 1,495, according to the college’s website.
In other news, board member Todd Schwartz gave an update on the college’s cross-country team. Schwartz also serves on the college’s sports committee.
The team now has 10 runners and four runners and is expecting walk-ons, he said.
There are now enough runners for college to set up both a men’s and a women’s cross-country team, Schwartz said.
The curators voted 7-1 in November 2019 to start a cross-country skiing program to compete in Division II of the National Junior College Athletic Association. It will be the first sanctioned sports team for the school.
Administrators and board members who supported the plan said the cross-country program could attract students to college who otherwise might not enroll. These students’ tuition and fee income would offset team-related expenses, which are estimated at $ 54,000 per year for a team of 20, they said.
A five-mile event and one-mile adult fun run are scheduled for August 21 at 7 a.m. on the Springdale college campus, Schwartz said.
“It should be a great time,” he said. “I think it’s going to be good business and we should have good turnout.”
The board also voted 7-0 to buy promotional merchandise for the college valued at $ 65,920, said Ron Branscum, chairman of the board.
All areas of the college will benefit from the purchase, including items the college will be giving away to prospective students to aid in advertising and recruitment, said Evelyn Jorgenson, college president.
